Intensification

Determining the drivers and trajectories of intensification

The project hypothesises that the potential trajectory for intensification – and therefore the combinations and sequences of solutions to enhance sustainable intensification of smallholder crop livestock systems – will vary depending on the drivers, past trends and current level of intensification in the farming system. We are calling this a ‘gradient of intensification.’

Comment on these questions:

  • What do you think are the key drivers of intensification that could determine the starting point of this project?
  • Can these drivers be assessed? Are you aware of information that could contribute to that assessment?

  1. What do you think are the key drivers of intensification that could determine the starting point of this project?

    1) Markets (which are influenced by socio-economic and cultural processes)
    2) Resource Availability (physical and social)
    3) Incentives and Innovation

Can these drivers be assessed? Are you aware of information that could contribute to that assessment?

Yes, it would be interesting to assess how these three drivers interact and what combinations would result in optimal systems (i.e. what are the minimal requirements in terms of market conditions, resources, and incentives that make intensification sustainable and lead to further innovation?).

ILRI has conducted research in this area. Could learn from the lessons of sustainable intensification in Asia.
