While insecticide spraying offers the most effective management strategy for insect pests in farmers’ fields, most farmers in Ghana spray only once in most cases. This is not enough to effectively control the insect pests.
In this study, the effect of a three-spray regime was compared to conventional farmer practice (one spray) on yield and net financial returns of cowpea on-farm. It was established that spraying insecticides three times on cowpea not only increases grain yield and net returns, but also reduces the probability of getting lower yields and financial returns which makes it suitable for smallholder farmers who are usually risk averse.
