A higher rate of nitrogen application provides higher economic benefit to farmers compared to the government recommended rate. There are visible differences between six maize varieties commonly grown in northern Ghana (used in this experiment) in terms of performance under higher fertilizer rate. Farmers should be encouraged to use 90kg of nitrogen per hectare in combination with varieties such as TZEE W STR QPM CO, SR W COF2, Abrohemaa, Obatampa and Omankwa and the government should disseminate the information through its extension system, enhance access of farmers to the inputs, and facilitate the release of TZEE W STR QPM CO and SR W COF2 .
