AfroWeeds workshop: Building weed science capacities in Tanzania
On 10 May 2012, the Africa Rice Center and the Sokoine University of Agriculture organized a workshop in Morogoro, Tanzania, to kick-start the Early Win project on ‘Building local capacities in weed management for rice-based systems in Tanzania‘.
The objectives of the workshop were to present the collaborative network Weedsbook and the AFROweeds identification tool and database to potential users in Tanzania, to demonstrate how to make a herbarium and field pictures of weeds, provide guidelines for identifying weed species, and finally register new members to Weedsbook.
The overall aim was to build local capacities in weed identification and management in Tanzania and to connect Tanzanian weed scientists and students to their peers in the wider region. 37 participants (including 15 students) attended this workshop.

More ‘early win’ projects
The Africa RISING program comprises three linked research-for-development projects, funded by the USAID Feed the Future Initiative, and aiming to sustainably intensify mixed farming systems in West Africa (Southern Mali and Northern Ghana), the Ethiopian Highlands and East and Southern Africa (Tanzania, Zambia and Malawi).
To produce some short-term outputs and to support the longer term objectives of the projects, in 2012 Africa RISING funded several small, short-term projects in each of the regions. More information.
