On 17–20 September, three Africa RISING scientists, Gundula Fischer (IITA), Bekele Kotu (IITA) and Mirja Michalscheck (WUR), got a chance to share insights from their work with the global research community at the annual interdisciplinary conference on research in tropical and subtropical agriculture, natural resource management and rural development (Tropentag 2019). This year’s conference featured presentations and posters directed at promoting science-based solutions for the sustainable provision of food and non-food commodities through agriculture and forestry under the theme: ‘Filling gaps and removing traps for sustainable resources development’.

In keeping with the conference theme, the posters and slides presented by the three scientists highlighted challenges and solutions for lingering challenges in smallholder postharvest mechanization, farmer decision- making and the applicability of typologies as well as gender- and age-biased land tenure systems.
