A catalogue of tested crop, soil, and water management options for Tanzania, Malawi, and Zambia
In 2012, Africa RISING funded an ‘early win’ project in Tanzania, Malawi, and Zambia led by the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT).
The project aims to identify and promote sustainable intensification (SI) pathways by evaluating tested crop, soil and water management options for their suitability under varied land (soil health) and socio-economic conditions that prevail in the target areas in Tanzania, Malawi, and Zambia.
The specific objectives are to:
- To avail to partners a set of previously tested soil, crop, and water management options for maize-based farming systems with potential for sustainably intensifying agricultural production and reducing climate-related risk in the target areas
- To identify land degradation hotspots and soil health constraint envelopes and their implications for crop response characteristics to fertilizer application and soil improvement
- To evaluate the availability to smallholder farmers of inputs required to implement above options in the target areas
- To assess the conduciveness of the political, extension, and economic environment for the dissemination of tested soil, crop, and water management options

More ‘early win’ projects
The Africa RISING program comprises three linked research-for-development projects, funded by the USAID Feed the Future Initiative, and aiming to sustainably intensify mixed farming systems in West Africa (Southern Mali and Northern Ghana), the Ethiopian Highlands and East and Southern Africa (Tanzania, Zambia and Malawi).
To produce some short-term outputs and to support the longer term objectives of the projects, in 2012 Africa RISING funded several small, short-term projects in each of the regions. More information.
