Most rural households in Tanzania like in other African countries, keep local chickens as a primary source of protein and income. Chicken are also regarded as one of the strategies for poverty alleviation among poor smallholders.
Most chicken in Africa are kept in free range systems where they mostly scavenge on available food sources that are supplemented with whole grains or kitchen leftovers. As a result, their output from local chickens in Tanzania and Africa in general is not as high as expected and there is need to improve their productivity.
This poster, produced for the Tropentag 2016 conference, highlights a study that generated fundamental information for improved nutritional management in rural chicken production in Tanzania.
